Addressing Polarization in Nigeria Civil Society Community

The 2022 Nigeria Social Cohesion Index (NSCI) was computed as 39.6%. This score remains below the average of 50%, and represents a 4.6% declined from the 2021 index of 44.2%; indicating a weakening on the state on cohesion in the country over the last one year.

In the rich tapestry of Nigeria’s cultural diversity and intricate socio-political landscape, civil society organizations have long served as pillars of democracy, accountability, and social harmony. Yet, recent trends reveal a concerning development – the rise of polarization within the very heart of civil society itself. This phenomenon threatens to erode the foundations of democracy, nurturing disinformation, inciting hate speech, and fostering competition for resources among Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

Introducing the timely initiative: “Addressing Polarization in Nigeria’s Civil Society Community.”

Backed by the Ford Foundation and spearheaded by Thoughts and Mace Advisory, this initiative embarks on a mission to explore the root causes, manifestations, and consequences of polarization within Nigeria’s civil society sphere. Its overarching goal is to illuminate the intricacies of polarization and pave the way for constructive dialogue, reconciliation, and collaborative action. Understanding these drivers is pivotal to dismantling divisive barriers and forging a path towards unity and cooperation.

  • Identify Areas for Common Ground: By pinpointing shared values and common objectives, the initiative seeks to establish a foundation for enhanced collaboration within civil society. By transcending divisions and nurturing a spirit of solidarity, the project aims to amplify collective impact and drive positive change across Nigeria.

Through these endeavors, the initiative aims to achieve a range of outcomes:

  • Policy Recommendations and Advocacy: Equipped with empirical evidence and firsthand insights, the initiative intends to develop a comprehensive policy framework outlining strategies for mitigating polarization and fostering unity within civil society. Moreover, engagement with government stakeholders will advocate for legal and constitutional reforms addressing the root causes of polarization.

  • Awareness and Engagement: Through targeted outreach and advocacy campaigns, the initiative seeks to raise awareness among key stakeholders about the challenges of polarization and the imperative of collective action. By mobilizing support within and beyond civil society, the project endeavors to galvanize momentum for change and drive meaningful progress.

In essence, this project represents a crucial step towards safeguarding the integrity of brilliant work by the civil society, nurturing inclusivity, and advancing the principles of democracy and social cohesion.
